Success in 4th Grade

It is important that your child is prepared for class with a good attitude, homework, and supplies each and every day.  Our class is a community and our students must learn to work cooperatively.  Kindness and consideration help make this classroom safe and pleasant for everyone.

It is my job to do my best to ensure that your child succeeds.  I cannot do it alone.  Your attitude toward school is as important as your child’s.  I will try my best to make this an exciting and meaningful experience for your child.  Together we can enjoy our time spent in fourth grade.

Assignment Calendar & Take-Home Folder

4th grade students receive an Assignment Calendar each month.  Each day your child should record any homework under the correct subject, and take home any reminders or notes.  At the start of the school year, all students must get a daily parent signature in their Assignment Calendar.  This helps to develop the habit of filling it out.  Their calendar is an important step in success with homework.  Please help your child see the importance organization offers.  The calendar is also a good place for quick notes to be exchanged between parent and teacher.

We use a take-home folder.  Each night your child should be bringing this folder home.  Inside should be the night’s homework, as well as, any letters to the parents.  Please check your child’s folder nightly.

Homework

You can expect your child to have homework most evenings.  I explain each item before it goes home and I allow time for questions after distributing it to the students.  In 4th grade, anywhere from 15-45 minutes of homework is suggested.  It is important for your child to have support in this area.  Please help your child to develop the discipline necessary to complete the assigned homework each night.  Missing work may result in make-up time during a “working lunch” or another special activity.  Additionally, a note will be sent home if your child is missing four assignments.  Should your child reach a total of five missing assignments a conference will be scheduled.

Grades

If your child’s paper has been graded, their grade will generally be presented in fraction form located at the top of the page.  Simply, the fraction displays the number correct over the total number possible.  For example, 95/100 equals a grade of 95% or an A.  On many assessments, I will require your child to share their work with you.  After sharing, I ask that they return the assessment with your signature for verification.  The grading scale for my class is as follows:

 A       100-90%

B        89-80%

C        79-70%

D       69-60%

F        59-0%
