Lesson 9: History of Illinois - 1600’s/Dual Timeline


Two Days approximately 45 minutes                      


Learning Standard: State Goal 16A: Apply the skills of historical analysis and interpretation.

Objective:  Compare and contrast the perceptions of different groups by creating a dual timeline.
Outcome:
Dual Timeline (Visual)

Activities:

(Note: You may wish to make transparencies of the blank timelines in order to model the completion of timeline.)

Refer students to Early History of Illinois dual timeline in double entry journal.
  1. Native American history (pg. 11, paragraphs 1 - 3).
  2. Marquette & Joliet (pg. 11, paragraph 4 and pg. 13, paragraphs 1 - 4).
  3. LaSalle (pg. 13, paragraphs 5 and 6).
Read aloud (teacher or better readers) one section at a time "The Voyageurs" from A Historical Album of Illinois pp. 11-13
Debrief  (whole class teacher directed) each section and fill out the blanks in the timeline with descriptions of the bold faced words.
On the Student Outline Map of Illinois
  1. Direct students to draw the route Marquette and Joliet followed through Illinois
  2. Direct students to add Cahokia
