Lesson 8: Early History of Illinois/Dual Timeline

One Day approximately 45 minutes
( if you use the website add another day 30 minutes)

Learning Standard: State Goal 16A: Apply the skills of historical analysis and interpretation.

Objective: Compare and contrast the perceptions of history by different groups by creating a dual timeline.
Outcome:
Dual Timeline (Visual)

Activities:

Review and reflect on historical perspective as introduced in the previous lesson through the reading of Encounter by Jane Yolen.
Examine a variety of timelines to underscore the idea that multiple points of view are not represented.
Read aloud "The Early People of Illinois" pp. 8-10 from A Historical Album of Illinois.
Allow the students to explore sites to further their construction of knowledge about life in pre-historic Illinois. This will help them in formulating questions for their double entry journal. (this could easily be several guided reading lessons and it would be helpful if you created a singular timeline electronically (if you have ibooks) or on your chalkboard or overhead)
Establish cooperative groups for research (They will work together through the completion of LESSON 11).
Glue and connect Early History of Illinois Dual Timeline and store in the double entry journal / do not glue to page 11 until after lesson 11 when the timeline should be complete. Best to not have students glue until they are completely finished.

Illinois Double Entry Journal Prompt page 12:

Pretend that you could interview a Mississippian child. What three questions could you ask to help you know more about their culture? (right-side of journal) Discuss responses.
