Lesson 7: From Geography to History


One Day approximately 45 minutes                       


Learning Standard:  State Goal 17D: Understand the historical significance of geography.

Objective: Discover the extent of Native American influence on North America through a discussion.
Outcome: Discussion (Oral)

Activities:
  1. Gather 120 sheets of paper and tape the first 10 sheets end to end
  2. Label only the first 5 sheets:
  3. top sheet 1900’s
    2nd sheet 1800’s
    3rd sheet 1700’s
    4th sheet 1600’s
    5th sheet 1500’s
  4. Show the attached sheets and ask: "What important historical event occurred in America around the time represented by the fifth sheet (Columbus discovered America in 1492.)
  5. Explain that 1492 was not the beginning of history in North America. The rest of the stack of paper represents earlier human habitation.
Demonstrate the proportion of North American history that is recorded through a timeline model:
Introduce historical perspective by reading Encounter by Jane Yolen.
