Lesson 4: Student Map of Illinois


One Week approximately 5 / 45 minute sessions                 


Learning Standard:  State Goal 17A: Locate, describe and explain places, regions and features on the Earth.

Objective: Apply knowledge of map elements by creating a student-constructed map of Illinois.

Activities:

Illinois Double Entry Journal Prompt  page 7:

Have students write the acronym TODALSIG one letter per line and then have them define the acronym as a review

  1. create a compass rose.
  2. include date and author.
  3. label lines of longitude and latitude ( teacher need to model as students copy) teacher directions
  4. label grid sections with letters horizontally  from left to right and numbers vertically from top to bottom (teacher needs to model as students copy)
Introduce and distribute a Map Rubric.
Distribute student outline maps of Illinois.
Direct students to:
Monitor student work
Distribute Illinois Sights worksheets.
