Lesson: Enrichment 2
|
One Day (approximately 45 minutes)
Learning Standard: Math State Goal 7.C.2a:
Describe relationships in a simple scale drawing.
Social Studies State Goal 17C: Locate, describe and explain places, regions and
features on the Earth
Objective:
Interpret Scale representations on maps
Create and apply an accurate scale coinciding with student map
Outcome:
Scale on Student Map
| Use "Distance Between Two
Points," to learn the relativity
of measurement. (note: on this worksheet, students will measure form different points and the lesson point is that a standard location to measure to and from is needed.) |
|
| Use a scaled map for practice identifying distance between points according to scale. | |
| Use "Calculating Polaris' Height" sheet to understand scale. | |
| Reinforce concept of determining distance through utilization of a map's scale with "My State" worksheet. | |
| Find an Illinois map and identify distance between two points which are also represented on student Illinois map. (note: distance between longitude lines at base of map should be easiest.) | |
| Calculate total miles between two points on reference map | |
| Measure distance between same two points on student map | |
| Divide know distance between two points and reference map by measurement in
inches on student map (Teacher may demonstrate) Note: Student Map is scaled to one inch represents twenty miles each |
|
Example of Scale: for appropriate inclusion of Student Map![]() Represent 10 miles as a half an inch and 5 miles as a quarter of an inch |
|
| Include scale on student map |
